On the superior surface of the body (the central portion) of the |sphenoid bone| is a deep depression called the sella turcica, or pituitary |fossa|, where the pituitary body sits. It is named the sella turcica after its shape which is similar to a turkish saddle. This depression contains a number of foramina, or small openings, through which a number of small vessels bring nutrients to the |pituitary gland|.
